The Lakes of Germany's Black Forest: Schluchsee and Titisee

Before my recent Historic Traveller Grand Tour, I was unfamiliar with the Black Forest, and it was wonderful to bring the folk tales and legends to life during my visit. One lovely unexpected feature of the region was the lakes between the trees, providing the opportunity for all kinds of watersports, hiking, and of course tomantic dining gazing out across the water.

Titisee is busier and more tourist-y than its less showy neighbour Schluchsee, especially in low season. Schluchsee has a gentle pace, or it did during my visit, when I was very lucky to stay in a Historic Hotels of Europe property, the Landhaus Mühle. This ancient farmhouse, now a luxury small hotel, was one of the founding Historic Hotels of Germany. My all-too-brief sojourn gave me the chance to learn all about the property and the region.
